Store No. 8, Walmart's technology incubator, sought to augment its internal engineering team with a group of Full Stack Engineers to focus on two innovative projects:
- A secure outdoor temperature-controlled IoT Grocery Box
- The InHome delivery experience using smart locks that enables delivery associates to dispatch groceries directly to the kitchen fridge.
The challenge was to assemble a large and diverse team of engineers who could bridge the gap between startup culture and enterprise scale, while also managing complex domains such as hardware integration (smart IoT devices, mobile apps, third-party integrations), on-demand streaming, and associated security and privacy requirements for end customers.
The engineering team required hands-on support, coaching, mentoring, management, and growth as Walmart scaled up the number of locations from dozens to thousands. This involved solving performance requirements for managing delivery volumes and scheduling challenges while maintaining high-quality software engineering.
During this multi-year engagement, multidisciplinary teams of engineers (Front End, Back End, Full Stack, and Mobile) collaborated with internal teams and senior leadership, leading to nearshore partnerships due to the consistent quality, low turnover, and ownership demonstrated by this team. This successful collaboration allowed Store No. 8 to achieve its innovation goals while integrating into Walmart Enterprise at their scale.
