Competition Center

Sony Interactive Entertainment, the industry leader in video games, recognised the rapid growth of eSports and the potential for being left behind if they didn't take a more active role. This realisation led to the creation of the PlayStation Competition Center.

From its inception as a pre-MVP concept to becoming a fully integrated console ecosystem years later, the platform allowed gamers to participate in digital tournaments using their PS4 consoles and even out integration through the PSOne Mobile App. It was also designed with future native PS5 integration in mind, which was still under development at the time.

The platform leveraged API integrations with ESL Gaming and involved complex device and console integration and testing, including PSNetwork authentication. Over time, the platform grew to serve 80 million gamers across 89 countries in 10 languages, launching a total of 17 games on the platform.

Throughout the project's evolution, cross-functional teams collaborated extensively, beginning with early on-site discoveries at Sony's headquarters in San Mateo, California. We as a team planned and solved globalisation support challenges while establishing a suitable hosting solution to accommodate their ambitious roadmap.

Working with PlayStation was refreshing and provided valuable insights into the secretive world of console development cycles, which typically span 5-6 years. This experience showcased the company's commitment to innovation and staying ahead of the curve in an ever-evolving industry.
